Why take part in a research study

Research participation by people living with arthritis and musculoskeletal conditions is very important to help ensure that the research responds to their needs and can achieve outcomes that will make a difference.

There are many reasons why people choose to take part in a research study:

  • To learn more about their condition.
  • Try a new medicine, device or app
  • To get early access to new types of care or treatment
  • To improve arthritis care for others by helping researchers to find and develop new treatments. medicines, tests and tools.

How Arthritis Australia check studies before listing them

Before a research study appears on the Arthritis Australia website, we review it to make sure it is suitable and clearly explained for people considering participation.

We ask researchers to provide:

  • Ethics approval documentation
  • A clear summary of the study in plain language
  • Information about what participation involves (time, location, and activities, and whether there is a payment or voucher for participants)
  • Who can take part
  • Participant information sheets and consent forms
  • Contact details for joining the study

What is ethics approval?

Ethics approval means that  a Human Research Ethics Committees (HREC) has approved the study. They check if the project meets ethical standards and guidelines, which include:

  • Are the benefits and risks clearly explained?
  • Are people treated fairly and respectfully?
  • Is participant information kept private and secure?
